UNIB studies sesame seeds and rose oil to treat uncomplicated pelvic inflammatory disease

Researchers from the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University, UNIB), Mercedes Briones and Vivian Lipari, collaborated in a research that studies the therapeutic efficacy and safety of sesame seeds with rose damascena oil to treat uncomplicated pelvic inflammatory disease.

Uncomplicated pelvic inflammatory disease (uPID) is a common infection that affects the female reproductive system. It can cause discomfort and health problems in women of reproductive age. Despite its prevalence, uPID is often misdiagnosed or attributed to psychological causes, which can lead to complications in patients.

This pelvic disease is usually caused by bacterial infections, including Mycoplasma genitalium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. According to conventional medicine, uPID is recognized as an inflammation induced by infections of the upper genital tract and surrounding structures, which in turn is incited by a lower genital tract infection. The exact mechanisms that trigger pelvic pain and related changes in the central nervous system are still unknown. However, some studies have shown a correlation between proinflammatory markers and central sympathetic activity and nociceptive nerve fibers.

Antibiotics used in the treatment of this infection have certain adverse effects on the human body. Therefore, natural medicines; botanicals or traditional herbal medicine are currently being studied in order to develop complementary and alternative treatments for uPID that are safe, readily available and effective in treating the condition, such as the combination of sesame seeds and rosa damascena oil.

Sesame seeds are an important source of protein, oil, minerals and antioxidants. These seeds have been shown to have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. On the other hand, rose oil is made from the petals of garden roses and has been used in Unani medicine for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antibacterial properties.

In this context, this research studies the therapeutic efficacy and safety of sesame seeds and damascena rose oil in the treatment of uPID. For this purpose, a novel drug was designed from the combination of the seed powder and rose oil. The results of this research showed that this drug has a similar therapeutic effect to the standard drug in the treatment of uPID due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antioxidant activities. In addition, it was found to be safe and improve the quality of life of women suffering from this pelvic condition.
