The researcher from the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University) (UNIB), Jose Breñosa, participates in a study that performs a comprehensive review of recent advances in artificial intelligence in dentistry and e-health.
Artificial intelligence has evolved significantly in the field of medicine; it has become one of the main technologies in health care. In the field of dentistry, AI has made significant advances in predictive machine learning models for dental care. Dentists use AI to provide accurate dental diagnoses and treatment planning, along with early detection of dental conditions that lead to better patient outcomes.
However, in dentistry, dental ailments are usually identified by images of the oral cavity; each is taken from different angles. Therefore, this process is largely manual. This process is tedious and error-prone when the diagnosis is made by inexperienced dentists. This means that human inference plays a key role in the analysis of x-ray images to inspect dental structures, bone loss, and cavities.
Despite major advances, state-of-the-art approaches require improvements to address current challenges that relate to limited data, class imbalances, limited generalization, lack of transparency and interpretability; there is also concern about the absence of external validation and, in addition, the full potential of machine and deep learning techniques has not been used in routine dentistry.
Therefore, this review presents a systematic survey of existing research on the clinical application of AI using x-ray and near-infrared imaging. It also discusses the limitations and challenges associated with the application in order to help overcome the challenges and improve dental care.
