Dr. José Breñosa, researcher at the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberomerican University) (UNIB), collaborates in a study that presents a method to find patterns in user mobility.
Today, the use of smartphones has increased. People tend to carry their devices all day long to stay in touch with others and exchange knowledge. Therefore, these devices have attracted the attention of researchers interested in studying human mobility patterns. Mobility is the result of repeated movements made by people in a particular place. Shopping, trips to the office or university, etc.
Researchers have tried to derive and test certain features, using data tools to ascertain human actions, such as bank bills, e-mails, and GPS systems. However, these tools have had limitations in size, data resolution, and adaptation. Cell phones are effective tools for analyzing mobility behaviors. This data can be useful for traffic control, urban planning, mobile marketing, and much more.
This research presents an analysis approach based on the similarity of users' mobility behavior as a function of location and time. The approach of this study is called SAA (similarity analysis approach), it uses the device information, namely the IP (Internet protocol) and MAC (media access control) address. For this purpose, the spatial and temporal preferences of people are analyzed: their preferred sites, the frequency of trips, and the lengths of these areas.
The results show that the proposed SAS approach is 33% more accurate in terms of recognizing the similarity of common user behaviors compared to the existing similarity approach.
