UNIB performs sentiment analysis and topic modeling on tweets based on ChatGPT

Dr. Monica Gracia Villar, a researcher at the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University) (UNIB), together with other researchers, performs a sentiment analysis on tweets related to ChatGPT to understand opinions.

AI-based chatbots are computer programs that have the ability to simulate human interactions by understanding speech and generating human-like responses. Thanks to their ability to provide personalized support and guidance, they have gained popularity on various platforms as tools to enhance users' digital experiences. For example, in education, chatbots have improved the learning experience for students.

One of the most popular chatbots is ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based platform that excels in generating consistent and contextually relevant responses. This chatbot has captivated millions of people, communities, and social media platforms; however, many others have pointed out its disadvantages.

Some concerns point to academic dishonesty because it can also be used as a tool for cheating in the educational environment; moreover, it could have a negative impact on students' critical and creative thinking.  Since an over-reliance on ChatGPT can diminish the development of these important skills.

Therefore, the aim of this research has been to understand the general sentiment and opinions regarding the use of ChatGPT in various contexts. The analysis relied on the opinions of people tweeting on X, formerly known as Twitter, to gain insight into their perceptions. To achieve this objective, the BERT analysis method was used to obtain very efficient results.

Research results

The results of the research revealed mixed feelings among users, with some expressing positive opinions and others expressing the opposite. However, most of the people expressed positively about ChatGPT, as they recognize its usefulness in various domains.

Analysis of these opinions provides valuable information regarding public perception of ChatGPT and can help researchers and developers understand the chatbot's strengths and weaknesses.
