UNIB designs a system for detecting faults on railroad tracks using acoustic data

Dr. Juan Castañedo Galán, a researcher from the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University)(UNIB), is participating in a study that designs a system for detecting faults on railroad tracks to avoid more accidents and human losses.

In some countries, the rail industry is crucial for the economy, facilitating the movement of goods and people.  Trains, having a larger carrying capacity than road vehicles, appeal to both governments and citizens.  However, various factors, including time, location, and weather, can contribute to railway accidents. These tragic events not only lead to loss of life but also significantly impact economic activities.

Many accidents occur due to deteriorating railroad tracks and the absence of advanced tools and methods to monitor track conditions.   Manual inspections, though essential, are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and susceptible to human error.  Moreover, ensuring safety becomes challenging as maintenance crews risk injury or even death during track inspections and repairs.  Therefore, consistent monitoring and fault detection of track conditions are vital to reduce the risk of rail accidents.

Monitoring track conditions and detecting faults are crucial to reduce rail accidents.  An automated solution is necessary to address derailment issues and guarantee thorough track examination.  This research introduces an efficient method utilizing acoustic signals for this purpose.  The aim is to design a system that assesses the provided inputs and delivers precise information about track conditions.  Specifically, the system should be capable of analyzing sound signals from the tracks and determining if any sections are compromised or damaged.
