The FUNIBER Cultural Foundation and the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), in collaboration with the International Ibero-American University (UNIB) and the Carolina Museum of History and Art, inaugurated on August 29 the exhibition «Tàpies, collection of the engraver Barbarà», a remarkable exhibition that brings together a careful selection of works by the renowned engraver Barbarà.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the museum's facilities in Carolina, Puerto Rico, until November 14, 2025.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent academic authorities, including Dr. Carol Morales, rector of UNIB; Yaira Velázquez, dean of Administration and Finance; and Odalys Ocasio, dean of Academic Affairs, representing UNIB and FUNIBER. Also in attendance was Ms. Michelle Gil, director of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Development of the Municipality of Carolina, along with her team, who contributed significantly to the success of the opening day.
The event brought together representatives from various cultural communities and attendees of all ages, creating an enriching and diverse atmosphere that fostered dialogue and appreciation of contemporary art.
The exhibition features 29 engravings that reflect the rich diversity of styles and artistic evolution of Tàpies throughout his career. Each piece offers an in-depth look at his stylistic changes, from his early explorations to his more mature works, highlighting how Tàpies employed complex symbolism that dialogues with scientific and abstract elements.
According to Federico Fernández, director of the Cultural Work, the works allow visitors to appreciate the author's wide stylistic repertoire, offering them a rich and varied visual experience. The exhibition also includes three books illustrated by Antoni Tàpies, published by Barbarà, which complement the artistic journey with a more intimate and reflective view of the Catalan artist's legacy.
Antoni Tàpies, a central figure of the second Spanish avant-garde, established himself as a key reference in 20th-century painting. Joan Barbarà, for his part, was a prominent artist who played a crucial role in the dissemination of art, welcoming such important figures as Joan Miró, Picasso, and Matisse to his studio.
With this initiative, the Cultural Work of FUNIBER, UNEATLANTICO, and UNIB reinforce their commitment to the promotion of art and culture as fundamental tools for social and educational development. In line with its institutional mission of offering equal opportunities and a student-centered teaching model, the university continues to consolidate itself as a cultural and academic reference point in the region.
