UNIB researcher presents new approach to improve wireless communication in indoor environments

Dr. Carlos Uc Ríos, researcher at the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University, UNIB), participates in a study that proposes a new advanced model to maximize the quality of the wifi signal in enclosed spaces in order to improve wireless communication.

The provision of wifi services is essential in everyday life, however, it is common to find problems of low signal and loss of connection in enclosed spaces, due to the presence of obstacles and objects that block the line of sight (LOS), which is the path along which the wireless signal propagates. In addition, signal reflection, signal coverage and transmission distance between communication devices are key concerns. The propagating waves are significantly weakened as they pass through walls, floors, ceilings and encounter static obstacles such as furniture, windows and doors. These factors affect signal strength and ultimately lead to poor communication.

In this context, Dr. Carlos Uc, together with other professionals, presents an advanced line-of-sight model to improve wireless communication in modern indoor environments. The proposed model includes components such as signal amplifiers, repeaters and reflectors, which are strategically connected to maximize line-of-sight between communicating devices and overcome targets that degrade the signal. In addition, a signal attenuation calculation algorithm was developed to quickly identify obstacles in an indoor environment, such as walls and corridors.

To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed model, it was compared with existing models using received signal strength (RSS) and packet delivery rate (PDR) in different scenarios. The results showed that the proposed model achieved high network throughput compared to existing models. This means that the wifi signal quality in indoor environments improved significantly.

This study has important implications for improving wireless connectivity in indoor spaces such as offices, homes and public spaces. Better wifi signal quality means faster connection speeds and an improved user experience for connected devices. In addition, this can have a positive impact on areas such as communication, productivity and entertainment.
