The Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Ibero-American University, UNIB) highlights and recognizes the research work of Professor Thamiris Magalhães de Sousa, director of final projects at this institution, following the publication of the scientific article “Beyond Reality Avoidance: Unraveling the Paradox of Escapism Through Self-Monitoring and Autonomy Mechanisms for Consumers’ Life Satisfaction” (Beyond Reality Avoidance: Unraveling the Paradox of Escapism Through Self-Monitoring and Autonomy Mechanisms for Consumers’ Life Satisfaction).
The study, conducted in collaboration with other researchers, was published in Psychology & Marketing, one of the most prominent international scientific journals in the fields of applied psychology, marketing, and consumer behavior. Published by Wiley and subject to a rigorous peer-review process, it is ranked in the Q1 quartile in the categories Business and Psychology, Applied, establishing itself as an international benchmark in these disciplines due to its editorial excellence and the scientific rigor of the studies it publishes.
The Paradox of Escapism
The study addresses a question that has sparked growing interest in consumer behavior research: Is escapism always a way to avoid reality, or can it become a beneficial experience for people?
To answer this question, the study develops the concept of the “paradox of escapism”, proposing a new theoretical framework that explains that escapist experiences are not, in and of themselves, positive or negative. Their impact depends on how people experience them and, above all, on how they subsequently integrate those experiences into their daily lives.
The study argues that activities such as listening to music, enjoying cultural experiences, or participating in other immersive activities can promote well-being when they allow individuals to replenish emotional resources, strengthen personal autonomy, and develop coping strategies that help them manage the demands of daily life in a healthier way.
To support this argument, the study employed a multi-method design that combined in-depth interviews, qualitative and quantitative analyses, statistical models, and experimental studies, providing evidence on the psychological mechanisms linking escapism, flow, self-reflection, autonomy, and life satisfaction.
The results expand knowledge in the fields of consumer psychology and marketing by offering an innovative perspective on the role of escapism in human well-being. Furthermore, the study opens new lines of research and provides guidance that can contribute to the design of consumer experiences aimed not only at entertainment but also at fostering psychological well-being.
