Dr. Yini Airet Miró, researcher at the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University, UNIB), collaborates in research that presents a transmission line protection scheme using a hybrid combination of signal processing techniques.
Power transmission networkds play a crucial role in delivering electricity efficiently and reliably to communities. However, as these networks become more extensive and complex, challenges arise in protecting transmission lines and maintaining the stability and quality of the power system. The integration of large-scale renewable energy sources, devices equipped with power converters, and nonlinear loads further worsen these problems.
Traditional fault detection methods using distance relays often have limitations in identifying power oscillations, load impacts, and high-impedance faults. In response, Dr. Miró, along with other researchers, has explored new techniques involving signal processing and smart technologies to overcome the limitations of conventional relays.
The researchers concluded that the performance of protection schemes can be improved by using a hybrid combination of signal processing approaches to process both current and voltage signals. The protection scheme is based on a hybrid combination of the Stockwell transform (ST) and the Hilbert transform (HT).
Results of the protection method
The effectiveness of the developed method was evaluated in different situations, including location, impedance, fault angle, and reverse power flow. The results showed that the algorithm was effective in identifying various types of faults at various stages. In addition, it was determined that the algorithm was able to detect faults under varying conditions, such as different fault impedances, different fault locations, and variations in fault angle. These results demonstrate the ability of the proposed method to classify and distinguish faults considering the number of affected phases and the impact derived from the interrelation of the phases.
