UNIB supports a method for the detection and embedding of watermarks in images

Daniel Gavilanes, researcher at the Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana (International Iberoamerican University) (UNIB), proposes a method that improves security services and is computationally less expensive.

Today, information technology has revolutionized every aspect of life. So much so, that our personal lives depend on it on several occasions. The use of the Internet has also facilitated communication, education, health care, and marketing, among others. However, theft and duplication of digital data have also increased.

Data security and confidentiality are very important aspects for companies and individuals in general. Today, more than one trillion bytes of data are generated and shared on social networks in a single day; therefore, the authenticity of digital data is a growing problem. To take care of people's security, educational and commercial companies use cryptographic algorithms to secure communication from both sides.

Cryptography and image watermarking provide various security, authenticity, integrity, and privacy services. Cryptography encrypts data before passing it to an insecure channel and sends a key to decode the data. Whereas, watermarking is a data-hiding technique used for copyright protection and content authentication. The watermark hides the data in multimedia content so that no one is aware of the presence of the hidden data.

The objective of this research has been to propose an image watermarking technique using least significant bit (LSB) and the Canny edge detection method. This method provides better security services and is computationally less expensive, which is currently in demand.

Research proposal

This research proposes a simple but efficient method. An image watermarking technique based on a Canny edge detection algorithm and LSB approach for embedding watermarks was proposed. This algorithm is used to find suitable places to embed watermarks since, on a smooth surface, attackers easily detect and break the watermark. LSB works at the pixel level in the time domain and is more efficient for embedding watermarks.

Therefore, the major contribution of this research is finding suitable places for embedding watermarks and providing greater security to the coded marks in the images, so that they are not easily erased.
