The importance of organizational management projects (OMP) in the business sector has led entrepreneurs and businessmen to use them as tools to modernize their structures and processes to improve business competitiveness and guarantee their survival in the market. However, the reality of each company and its operating conditions and available resources can represent significant challenges for the formulation and development of these projects.
Business managers draw on various theoretical approaches to management, either implementing them as a single model of administrative management or combining elements and principles from different approaches to create hybrid models that fit the particularities of the organization and the leadership and management style. The introduction of a structured project formulation model may be limited by the size of the company, especially in the case of micro and small enterprises (MSEs), where resources are more limited. As the size of the company increases, more analysis and understanding of the variables involved is required in proportion to the complexity of the organizational and operational structure involved.
MSEs play an important role in the economies of the countries but their level of business survival is low. In Colombia, for instance, the business continuity rate is only 60% in the first year of existence. The scarcity of economic resources and the lack of financing opportunities are some of the causes of operational failure. In addition, the very structure of business projects may present deficiencies in their ideation and organization, which contributes to a high rate of business failure.
Despite economic shortcomings, new financing modalities for microenterprises have been identified, both through public and private programs. However, the cause of low business survival is not limited to financial issues alone. It is evident that the inadequate formulation and design of the OMP also play an important role in the success or failure of microenterprises.
